Funded Trading Account: How It Works

A funded trading account gives traders access to firm capital after passing an evaluation. Here is how they work, what they pay, and how to get one in 2026.

A funded trading account is a live account where the capital comes from a prop firm, not the trader. The trader passes an evaluation challenge, receives access to the firm's capital, and keeps a percentage of the profits.

What a Funded Trading Account Is

A funded trading account is a live or simulated trading account where the prop firm provides all the capital and the trader earns a profit split on positive results. The trader never puts personal savings at risk beyond the initial evaluation fee.

Most funded accounts operate on an 80/20 profit split. The trader keeps 80% of gains and the firm takes 20%.

This model has made high-capital trading accessible to traders who have the skill but not the starting capital.

How a Funded Trading Account Works

Getting a funded account follows a standard three-stage process at most prop firms.

The first stage is the evaluation. The trader buys access to a simulated account and must hit a profit target, usually 8%, without breaching the maximum drawdown limit, usually 10%. This stage typically runs 20 to 30 trading days.

The second stage is verification. The profit target drops to around 5% and the time window shortens, but the same drawdown rules apply. This confirms the first stage was not a lucky run.

The third stage is the funded account itself. The trader receives a live account with the firm's capital, follows the firm's risk rules, and requests payouts after each profit cycle.

What a Funded Account Pays

The income from a funded account depends on account size, monthly return percentage, and profit split.

Account SizeMonthly ReturnGross ProfitTrader Keeps (80%)
$25,0005%$1,250$1,000
$50,0005%$2,500$2,000
$100,0005%$5,000$4,000
$200,0005%$10,000$8,000

A trader generating 5% monthly on a $100,000 funded account earns $4,000 per month. The same 5% return on a personal $5,000 account earns $200. The funded model scales income without requiring the trader to risk personal capital.

The Rules Inside a Funded Account

Every funded account has rules that, if breached, end access immediately.

The two most common are the daily loss limit and the maximum total drawdown. The daily loss limit is typically 5% of the account balance. A trader on a $50,000 account who loses $2,500 in one day has the account closed for that trading session.

The total drawdown is usually 10%, meaning the account cannot fall more than 10% below its starting balance. Some firms use trailing drawdown, where the floor rises as the account grows in value.

The funded account does not replace trading skill. It replaces capital. A trader with consistent positive results earns far more on a $100,000 funded account than on a $3,000 personal account.

How to Get a Funded Trading Account

Risk Warning: Not all prop firms pay consistently. Before paying any challenge fee, search the firm name on Reddit and Trustpilot for recent payout reports. Firms with no verifiable payout history carry counterparty risk that outweighs the income potential.

Start by choosing a firm that fits your trading style and instrument preference. Read how to choose a prop firm for the full evaluation checklist.

Once you have chosen a firm, select an account size you can manage without overtrading. Pass the evaluation by following the drawdown rules and hitting the profit target within the time window.

Most traders take one to three attempts before passing. The fee per attempt ranges from $80 for a $10,000 account to $600 for a $200,000 account at most firms. Read how to pass a prop firm challenge for the exact preparation steps before attempting your evaluation.

FAQ

What is a funded trading account?

A funded trading account is a live or simulated account where the prop firm provides the capital and the trader earns a percentage of the profits. The trader's only financial exposure is the challenge fee paid to access the evaluation.

How much can you make with a funded trading account?

At 5% monthly on a $100,000 funded account with an 80% profit split, a trader earns $4,000 per month. Returns and account sizes vary by firm. The income scales with the account balance, not the trader's personal savings.

What happens if you lose money on a funded account?

If you breach the daily loss limit or total drawdown limit, you lose access to the funded account. The firm does not hold the trader liable for further losses beyond the original challenge fee.

Can you withdraw from a funded account at any time?

Most prop firms run payout cycles of 14 to 30 days. Withdrawals can be requested at the end of each cycle once profits exceed the minimum payout threshold. Processing typically takes one to five business days.

Are funded trading accounts legitimate?

Yes. Funded accounts from established prop firms are legitimate. The key due diligence step is verifying payout history on independent platforms like Reddit and Trustpilot before paying any evaluation fee.
